Wetsuits Surf Manager Matt Walls Spots Sea Turtles in Hermosa

I usually don’t send out recap emails from training paddles but today was a day I will never forget. With today being my last paddle before I take off for Molokai , I was asking myself, is this a good idea? In my mind I start thinking about all of the “what if’s”. What if I pull something in my shoulder? What if something bad happens and it ruins my trip? Is eight miles too far to go four days before a 32 mile race? Stupid thoughts like that filled my head as I walked my dog in the early morning darkness.

As Weems arrived in my back yard and we started talking the “what if” thoughts in my head subsided. We got ready and headed out to the beach like normal. At the beach we met up with the normal crew and headed out into the water and headed down to the break wall. We got to the break wall and headed out to the fourth pylon buoy where we all sat up and rested while we all regrouped.

About 1 minute into our paddle to the Manhattan Pier I hear Bill shout “that is the biggest jelly fish I have even seen’ then instantaneously Dan Flynn says “that is no jelly fish that is a SEA TURTLE”. As soon as I heard sea turtle I stopped in my tracks and flipped around and there it was. Right before all of our eyes, a living, breathing sea turtle in the waters off of Hermosa Beach . Its shell was about 2-3 feet long and about 1-1.5 feet wide and it had barnacles growing on it back. It just chilled near the surface and came up for a small breath of air every once in a while. Of course none of us had a camera to document our sighting but it was for sure something I will never forget. We all just stared at it in disbelief. I remember my grandfather telling me that there use to be sea turtles out here but I thought those days were long gone. I all the years I have been surfing, paddling, diving in the south bay I never thought I would see the day that I would see a sea turtle. That just made my year.

As we left the turtle to continue his slow voyage off to where ever he was going, we were escorted away by about 40 little common dolphins that were swimming along underneath us and then popping up just in front of our boards. They stayed with us for a long time.

Today was a true nature paddle, we even had some seals swim up and give us a look. I could not have asked for a better send off paddle than to be out doing what I love with all my friends and have this amazing run in with an animal that I had given up hope of ever seeing in the waters off of my home.

Holly Beck, Chandler Parr and Friends in Fiji

Body Glove surfers Holly Beck and Chandler Parr joined friends Mary Osborn, Jennifer Flanigan and Kaley Swift on an epic surf and dive trip aboard the beautiful Tui Tai in Fiji. The girls surfed their brains out, spent time under water, did some stand up paddled, explored waterfalls, drank kava and hung out with the amazing Fijian people. Check out the great Surfline Feature story with captions by Holly Beck.

Body Glove Surfer of the Month: Ezekial Lau

Body Glove surfer of the month has to be Hawaiian Ezekial Lau. Zeke made Hawaii sports history last week at Huntington Beach, Calif., during the 2010 NSSA championships. The 16-year-old from Honolulu won the High School Varsity Men's Shortboard title, becoming the first national interscholastic surf champion in Kamehameha Schools' 123-year history. Lau also won the NSSA Explorer Men's crown.
He followed that up with a win at the Rip Curl GromSearch at Kewalos where he took the Boys 16 and under title, the H20 Overdrive Maneuver of the Event and the Dragon High Heat of the Event.

Not a bad summer month for the kid. Congrats Zeke and we look forward to seeing more!!

TRIP TESTIMONIALS

"What a profound journey, life altering experience, and eye opening adventure. My perspective is shifted and my body is still buzzing!"

“The experience is beyond amazing. I invite anybody even just THINKING about it ... GO! it may just change your life in the best way imaginable.” –Kim R.

"This trip really gave me the opportunity to use my skills and knowledge to give back to the community, as well as enabling me to experience the beauty and culture of Nicaragua in a very hands-on and personal way. Donating just one week of my time I was able to collaborate with a great team to provide clean drinking water for hundreds of school children for many years to come. More than any other project I have completed during my career it was the water purification shelter that made the years of education at architecture school worthwhile. It is amazing to see how even the most modest project can have such a significant impact on the lives of those that are in need." – L. Hoad

"An eye-opening, and wonderful trip." --Shayla Paxton

"Make no mistake: you will have fun on this trip, but more importantly, you will never forget the experiences you have and relationships you forge, and having made a real difference in people's everyday lives, you will return to your own with a new understanding of what you really need." -Hank O.

"I can't say enough about the connections we made with each other and the personal growth I experienced while on this trip. Every day, while learning about this new culture and each other, I was also learning about myself. I'm so grateful for that." - Jennifer M.

"Words cannot accurately describe my recent trip to Nicaragua. It was fulfilling in ways that I could not imagine. Unexpected surprises occurred daily and friendships were formed during some unforgettable excursions. The volunteer work we did turned our surf/yoga retreat into a divine spiritual adventure. Many of us were overwhelmed by the children in Jiquilillo and Chinandega. It didn't matter what they were receiving-- a bowl of soup, a surf lesson, a new pair of Adidas tennis shoes or even a toothbrush, the kids were always grateful. And despite having very little--- their hearts would be busting with joy every time they caught a glimpse of us riding down a dirt road, in an open vehicle. Sharing with others less fortunate, communing with nature and getting to know new people made my entire experience worthwhile and I would not hesitate to do it again." - M.De Ruse

Body Glove's Nate Yeomans Works with Surfer's Healing

ASP World Tour Campaigner Nate Yeomans Gives Back with Surfer's Healing

DOHENY BEACH, California/USA (Thursday, July 1, 2010) - Nate Yeomans (USA), 28, is one of California's greatest ever exports. A lightning-fast forehand and backhand approach that mixes no-nonsense carves with a full array of progressive fin-free and aerial maneuvers, Yeomans has been at the vanguard of futuristic surfing for years. Into his rookie year on the ASP World Tour, Yeomans finds himself in the fight of his life to crack the Top 32 following Tahiti and stay amongst the world's elite. Despite all this, Nate still takes time to volunteer with Surfer's Healing (an organization that takes Autistic children and gets them in the water surfing), where he was a major attraction to the kids at Doheny yesterday.

"I have a cousin that suffers from autism," Yeomans said. "I actually got the call from a friend yesterday to come down and help out. It was amazing to see how it really soothes the kids when there out there surfing. I was talking to a mom of one of the grommets and see said, 'It's a sensory overload for them out in the water. All the different feelings that are going on really mellows out the kids.' It's just like us. That's why we surf, and to be able to share that with them was one of the raddest things I've done. The only bummer was none of the kids wanted to leave. One of the boys, Jordan, got done surfing. They brought him in, and as soon as he touched the sand he turned around and ran right back to the water and started swimming to get back on a board. Its was awesome."
